Hypnosis vs Psychic Power

By Rev. William H. Duby

Hypnosis has been used by every culture in one form or another throughout human civilization. I've read that the earliest evidence was found among the Indians of North and South America. Those who employed it were known by many names, such as medicine men, wizards, high priests, witch doctors, priest-magicians and obeah doctors. The particular name by which they were called is irrelevant. We could just as easily call them psychics, mystics or gurus. Isn't a rose by any other name still a rose? It is suffici ent to say that these people were considered healers by their society. In preparation for healing work, these healers would put themselves into an environment of their choosing where they could invoke the power of concentration for the purpose of entering a positive trance state in which to do their work of wellness.

Europe became involved with hypnosis in the 1700s. It was an Austrian doctor, Franz Anton Mesmer (1733-1815), who recognized the psychic power of this ancient healing art. Mesmer did very much like the shamans. He dressed himself in a flashy style. He transformed his office into dimly lighted rooms with a myriad of mirrors and soft music. In other words, he set up an atmosphere of seduction to help induct his clients for mental and emotional healing. Since Mesmer was the first in Europe to discover how to u se the ancient healing art, his name became the label to explain the condition. People who entered the trance state were considered "mesmerized."

The word hypnosis didn't come into play until an English physician, James Braid (1795-1860), became interested in the work of Mesmer. He scientifically deduced that mesmerism was a "nervous sleep." As a result of his study he coined the word hypnosis, from the ancient Greek name of the god of sleep. Braid demonstrated without a shadow of a doubt that hypnotized individuals were highly impressionable when given verbal suggestions.

As people became greatly interested in the use of this psychic power for healing purposes, the theories came forth one after the other.

Two other men, Auguste Ambroize Leibeault (1823-1904) and Hippolyte Berhneim (1837-1919), regarded hypnosis as a natural phenomenon. They realized that what the individual expected tended to become realized. The hypnotist uses the psychic power of mental influence to work on the individual for the purpose of healing. As sincere men began serious studies on the profound healing capabilities of hypnotism, it began to become accepted and moved beyond the theatrical into the educational realms.

Hypnotism has a therapeutic value beyond belief. Freud realized the existence of the unconscious (subconscious) by observing individuals in a trance state. I believe that Freud eventually rejected hypnosis as a tool because his egotism favored his own technique of free association and dream interpretation. This setback, of course, did not discourage others from using hypnotism to help people to get unstuck from negative mental image pictures.

In the 1950's, the subject of hypnosis began its modern rebirth. Researchers found hypnosis had a potent therapeutic value. The trance state is now realized by many as a safe and effective tool for changing behavior. The subconscious is the natural mind of man. It is his perfect mind, having perfect understanding of his perfection as a soul personality. Within it lies the storehouse of memory about every person, place or condition. It is just a matter of tapping into the power of the subconscious to change your life for the better. Anyone can do it, but not everyone does it because they fail themselves miserably for not realizing its curative powers.

When many people hear the words "hypnotism" or "psychic ability" their mind conjures up negative images of being put under the control of some depraved individual. This may happen in the movies but not in real life. If anything, the opposite will be the case once you enter the trance state. You don't lose control - you gain control. You don't go asleep but come awake with absolute awareness as to what is taking place in the moment.

The individuals in a trance state will find themselves being able to do what they seemingly couldn't do before because they were self conscious. Entering a trance state is as natural as eating, sleeping, mating or going to the bathroom. It is a simple occurrence people undergo several times during the day. It is a relaxed state of resting the nervous system. When the nervous system is relaxed the body and mind are perfectly at ease for safe keeping and well being. Children do it all the time when they play their games.

Hypnotism should be called neuro-hypnosis because the nervous system relaxes like the muscles of the body do when you put yourself to sleep at night. The wonderful thing about hypnotism is that it will show you the way it can be when you quit lying to yourself that fantasy is better than reality. You don't have to waste your life struggling like a salmon swimming up stream only to spawn and die. Hypnosis can set you into the freedom of a trance state to help you realize that you have all the psychic power w ithin you to arise in consciousness and think clearly, and become good towards yourself and others. It can be used to help you feel better mentally, physically and emotionally. It cannot harm you in anyway. If anything, it can greatly enhance your overall well being.

A lot of people differentiate between hypnosis and psychic ability. I find myself amused with their appraisal on the subject matter. I often wonder if they truly know what they are talking about. There isn't such a thing as psychic principles and hypnotic principles, per se. There are, however, spiritual principles of universal law that pertain to the metaphysical reality, the same as there are natural principles of natural law that pertain to the physical reality.

Hypnotism is the work of psychic power and psychic power is the natural use of soul essence. And when I use the word soul the thesaurus mentions several synonyms such as spirit, mind, consciousness, inner self and genius.

Psychic ability or psychic power is a natural part of the soul personality. And when I use the word psychic the thesaurus mentions several synonyms such as supernatural, metaphysical, supersensible, extrasensory, supersensory, telepathic.

It is safe to say that the hypnotic or psychic power demonstrated by using spiritual principles will require the individuals to enter a trance state of mind where they will alter consciousness. So, whether I say, I am psychic and I have power to go within, or I am a hypnotist and I have power to enter a trance state, I am saying the same thing. It is just a matter of semantics that makes it appear as if the two are different. Both are the same because each demands the exercise of the identical spiritual pri nciples.

There are as many ways to enter the trance state as there are people upon the earth. And, I might add, everyone at sometime, everyday, enters a trance state. Whenever consciousness is altered for any reason, a trance state becomes the operative. When someone sits down to watch television and gets caught up in the plot of the movie, they transcend time and space and enter a trance state of altered consciousness. In other words, they were caught up in one thing and became caught up in another.

Anton Mesmer was the first individual in Europe to recognize this ancient healing art of exercising the psychical power to alter consciousness. He put together a flamboyant costume of clothing for himself to wear as well as setting up a dimly lit environment with soft music. He would have people sit in a circle and hold on to metal rods with a low voltage of electricity flowing through them. He'd then go around and suggest different things to different people for different reasons. Those individuals who acc epted his suggestions were healed because they had in mind the expectancy to become a whole person. Mesmer simply provided the way and means.

Now, think about something for a minute. When two people get dressed up for a dinner date and go to the restaurant of choice with dim lighting, soft music and red table cloths they are entering an atmosphere similar to the one Mesmer set up for his work of helping people alter consciousness. What they don't know, more often than not, is that the restaurant owner is just as much of a hypnotist as Mesmer. Mesmer provided the way and means for the trance state of altered consciousness to take place. The restau rant owner does the same thing. The only difference between the two is that Mesmer went around and did the suggesting while the restaurant owner lets the two people do it to each other. Of course, Mesmer provided healing suggestions and more often than not the two people are wheeling and dealing with their own suggestions.

Let's look into this restaurant scene! The two people are sitting at a table in the restaurant. Each drinks a few cocktails that could just as easily give them a buzz as the metal rods Mesmer used to give his clientele a buzz. Likewise, the two people begin talking back and forth until one or the other thinks it is time to give a suggestion of one kind or another. If the suggestion spoken is accepted, each alters their consciousness (rid themselves of inhibitions) and prepares to play the necessary role to get down with one another. So, in effect, one must enter the trance state of altered consciousness to mate as well as with other things.

When two people are going to get married they undergo a wedding ceremony. The ceremony takes place in an atmosphere agreed upon by the two who are going to join in wedlock. By taking the vows (pledge of words) to heart (the subconscious) they are suggesting to each other to enter the trance state of an altered consciousness. By doing so, they kiss and are off to the honeymoon (remaining in the trance state) where they consummate the marriage. In other words, two excellent forces bond to become one superexce llent force to reckon with. Again, in effect, a trance state of altered consciousness had to take place.

When an individual goes to church and sits in worship of God while listening to the sermon of the minister, his or her mind begins to enter a trance state of altered consciousness because of the particular setting of the atmosphere, rituals and exhortation.

When an individual listens to a politician spewing rhetoric he is likely to enter a trance state because the crafty tongue of the speaker has a way with words that helps the individual into the trance state of an altered consciousness.

Hitler was a dynamic speaker. He knew how to address the national image of the German people. He was able to capitalize on the fact that they, as a German race, felt defeated and discouraged in losing World War I. By telling them constantly that they were the chosen Aryan race, he single-handedly inspired them to enter a trance state of altered consciousness. Of course, he got the blame for what they elected him to do. He couldn't have led them to do the things they did without their express permission.

In their heart of hearts the German people had to face the fact that Hitler had only the power they gave him to do what he did. Obviously, his egotism got the best of him and millions upon millions suffered and died. In fact, he wasted his life as well as destroying the lives of millions of Jewish people. Nevertheless, if the German people didn't truly desire to feel superior to other nationalities the holocaust couldn't have occurred in the first place. So, what is the learning lesson? It is the neutral li fe force that proceeds from the heart (subconscious) that causes negative reaction towards people of every, race, color, creed, national origin, sexual gender and sexual persuasion.

Roosevelt did the same thing as Hitler. He knew how to address the national image of the American people. It has been reported that Roosevelt knew beforehand that the Japanese would bomb Pearl Harbor. If so, he wanted them to do it so that he had a good excuse to enter the war. We must remember that Roosevelt was in office during the depression and people didn't have work. A war was just the thing to get the economy and money from the bankers flowing again. He had an evil empire as an enemy. Japan, of cours e, bit off more than they could chew.

John F. Kennedy did the same thing as Hitler. He knew how to address the national image of the American People. Kennedy inherited the Cuban problem from Eisenhower. He lost in Cuba because of Castro and learned to stand his ground with the Soviet Union when it came to the missile crisis. The space race was the catalyst for his charisma to exercise the psychic power necessary to inspire millions of Americans when he said, "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country."

Many politicians have been elected to office by making certain the minds of the people believe (picture and feel) there is an outside enemy who will take their land, possessions or freedom away from them. The old Soviet Union was supposedly the enemy of America for decades. The new line of rhetoric is that the cold war has been won and everyone should be proud that communism is defeated. In truth, the cold war hasn't been won. Communism is alive and well. We just don't call it communism anymore. It isn't po litically correct to think communism. The new synonym for communism is democracy. Isn't it amazing how many countries are using the word democracy? If you believe the majority of these countries are democracies, then you are "spaced out."

The founding father's idea of democracy and the democracy of the modern politicians are different as night and day. There is a vast difference between a Republican form of government based upon true democratic principles and a Democratic government based upon socialistic ideals and controlling the people through military might, religious rule or economic slavery. The former is a government for the people, by the people and unto the people. The latter is a government against the people, for the banking carte ls and big business interest, and unto the politicians to legislate the legal law to usurp the authority of the people to thrive in their life, liberty and pursuit of happiness.

The people of the old Soviet bloc weren't the enemy of the United States and the people of the United States weren't the enemy of the people of the old Soviet bloc. What the people of these countries fail to realize is that they are kept asleep to who the real enemy happens to be; namely, the crafty politicians who don't have the foggiest idea of how to run a peace time government without the economy falling apart. Hitler didn't know how to do it. This is why he built a war machine. Neither did Roosevelt, S talin or Churchill. They also built mighty war machines. All these leaders needed was an enemy to fight so that they had a reason to justify their staying in office.

The problem upon earth hasn't been man himself but the few men who desire to lead the majority of men astray from exercising their common sense. And the best way to do this is to instill a false sense of pride in their national culture by indoctrinating them upon a deceptive education. In their theory, what's best for society is best for man, rather than what's best for man is best for society. The latter is scorned and neglected by the few who thrive upon leading the many away from thinking well of themsel ves in relationship to thinking well of others.

"Man's inhumanity unto man" has been happening upon this planet since the days of antiquity. What's more vital to be realized is that a great man entered this earth plane some 2,000 years ago. His name was Jesus, who lived in history. If we look at Jesus strictly as a religious figure, we'll find ourselves caught up in a whirlwind of religiosity. I am not concerned with religious discourse in this article. This isn't the time and place. I am only interested in bringing to mind that Jesus made reference to t he fact that the natural man must be reborn (born anew) before he can enter into the kingdom of heaven within himself. In other words, he must be willing to enter a trance state where the inbred prejudicial consciousness can be altered from a negative to a positive state.

The religious leader, Nicodemus, couldn't fathom the concept Jesus made reference to when he was told that he had to be reborn. In short, Jesus told him that things of the spiritual cry out for things of the spiritual, while things of the flesh cry out for things of the flesh. Jesus could have just as easily said that things of the spiritual were psychical matters of the metaphysical, while things of the flesh were natural concerns of the physical. Or, he could have said that as long as Nicodemus was lookin g at things from a natural level of consciousness, he would always seek for someone to take care of his needs. If, on the other hand, he'd look at things from a spiritual level, he would see that he had everything he needed within himself for his fulfillment.

The intent of Jesus was to help awaken the humanity from the negative state that their ancestry had hypnotized them into believing since birth. As he went about doing that great deed the religious and political powers at the time became very upset, knowing well that if they didn't stop him, the people would begin to awaken from their stupor and refuse to remain stupid. It was the religious leader, Caiaphus, who said, "It is better that one man should die than a whole nation perish."

It is sad when you come to think about it that whenever a "good-hearted" individual enters this earth plane with the calling to help awaken the humanity from the slumber of a negative hypnotic trance state, the religious and/or political powers begin to get upset. We saw this happen with the killing of John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy. The whole world was in shock when these men were needlessly slain. The same thing happened to Ghandi. It isn't an accident these things happen.

The Dalai Lama of Tibet or the Pope in Rome aren't going to help awaken the humanity. If they had the charisma to exercise such psychical power, a grand awakening would have happened by now. Political leaders aren't in agreement with their philosophical outlook. What the world needs is men like Patrick Henry who said, "I know not what course others may take, but as for me, give me liberty or give me death." He said what he meant and meant what he said. His convictions were converted into conduct. Unless suc h men arise in consciousness and act upon their convictions the leadership of the world of people will continue towards remaining in a negative trance state of hypnotic slumber for ages to come. As the flower arises from the seed, the men needed must arise from within the humanity for a conversion in consciousness to take place for the better.

The point that I am making is that everyone born upon this planet is inherently in a negative hypnotic trance state until they begin to seek the truth that inwardly shows them this to be true. In that light, very much like people who undergo a near death experience, a polarity shift from a negative to a positive state takes place and they are better off for this experience because they feel as though they were born anew. Of course, a tragic or near death experience isn't the prerequisite. It appears that wa y because the humanity is taught to put their education in the way of their learning. You can just as easily receive a college degree and get caught up in the negative trance state as you can anything else that makes you feel superior to others. The mid-life crisis is the extension of the teen years when the identity crisis began. It is the second warning that you are operating upon a false image in relationship to yourself and others.

People do enter a trance state of altered consciousness every day, in every way. If this weren't the case, they could never rest their mind and dream their dreams. Those who think they are high and mighty enter a negative trance state while those who are humble enter a positive trance state. It isn't so much that we go into a trance state - it goes without saying that we will go into the trance state for one reason or another - it is more of a question whether we are going to begin to truly learn how to eff ectively use our psychic power to create a good habit of getting positive rather than negative subconscious responses.

The following statement should inspire us. Let's try and hear it. Either we get into our subconscious and deprogram the negativity, or the religious, political and social leaders are going to capitalize on the ignorance that we refuse to enlighten. Forewarned is forearmed. We don't learn from hindsight only insight. History will attest to this fact. Eyesight will often deceive when first impressions are more important than the second sight that will help us correct our perception.

When I was child I remember so often adults telling me that I should "watch out" for the occult. I did watch out. Of course, I knew that they meant for me to stay away from the psychical aspect of life. The more they did, the more I became curious as to why. I was told that the occult was the work of the devil. What I found out is why they didn't want me to learn about the esoteric reality of the holy scriptures. I'd wake up from the stupor of their fantasy that they could keep me "spell bound" by educating me to remain stupid on their behalf.

I gladly see through much of what is happening in the world at large. I'm certain most people do, although they would like to believe that they don't see what they do see. I don't believe I can afford the luxury of pretending that I didn't see what I saw. I'd rather be considered crazy than go insane because I don't want to look at what I know I have seen with my own eyes and viewed with my own mind. I am not as much bothered by the insanity that I see because I have learned to be amused. Some people believ e that ignorance is bliss. I am not one of those people. I am a seeker of truth. I don't care where I find it. The truth sets me free from thinking I didn't see what I realize I did.

I choose to remain a student of life rather than a teacher of death. I know that a society of people will eventually perish that refuses the inner vision necessary to perpetuate sanity rather than insanity. We must see where we are going by knowing where we've been and realizing how to improve our lot in life. The leadership in this country isn't going to do it. They are blind, deaf and dumb and enjoy staying that way. We must do it. It must become a grass roots effort. A government of the people, by the pe ople and unto the people can only come about when the people of every race, color, creed and national origin are self governing. We can't do that until we care about ourselves enough to help us begin to care about others. And caring about others isn't so much trying to improve them as improving our perceptions about them. When you are willing to live your life in such a way that you are living for the next seven generations then you are alive and not before.

We must learn spiritual discernment if we are going to arise in consciousness and take back the government that needs to return to a sense of sanity for the well being of prosperity for its people.

We get the leadership in this country that we do because the masses aren't willing to lead themselves into their subconscious with the intent to change their attitude and behavior from negative to positive. Everything seems to be going wrong because the political body of elected officials aren't willing to make the American people the first and foremost special interest group. There isn't any sane reason why millions of people are unemployed and living on the streets, much less starving and dying in a count ry that has supposedly won the cold war.

Why did our parents and their parents suffer greatly on the behalf of this generation if they didn't think their government was going to reward their efforts by making sure the offspring had a better government than they did?

People don't elect politicians they feel are going to betray them but those they feel are going to befriend them. The only problem I see that we have as a people is that we are still foolish and want to trust the politicians rather than trust the God of our heart to supply us with our greatest need on a daily basis; namely, common sense. We suffer great indignation because we're educated to believe in a self serving government that promises everything but gives us nothing but lip service.

It just doesn't make sense why we allow the elected politicians to insult our intelligence. They are just as much in a "bad trance" as the religious leaders who tell us that we will get our reward in the hereafter.

What happened to the kingdom of heaven is at hand?

What ever happened to the land of milk and honey where there is more than enough for everyone?

If heaven isn't upon the earth then none of us belong here. Heaven is within the people and heaven can't emerge because a few people refuse to step aside and let the majority of the people learn how to manifest it for the benefit of themselves and each other.

I'd like to know if Fidel Castro can't get Cuban cigars smuggled into the United States, how in hell can the drug kingpins get dope peddled on nearly every street corner of America without the help of the government on some level or another?

Americans aren't truly stupid people. They are simply educated to remain in the stupor of their education and asleep to the truth of learning what they inwardly know and need to realize for the safe keeping of their family, friends and the next seven generations. This de facto government serves the needs of every people in nearly every other country but the people in their own country. What's ironic is that the American people buy the rhetoric of self serving politicians and do nothing but watch, just like the people of Germany did nothing when Hitler told them to suffer for the Motherland.

We truly are like sheep going to the slaughter. If this isn't proof that we are hypnotized and in a bad trance then nothing is. I don't advocate that this government should be overthrown by an outside force such as the people getting up in arms. But, I do advocate that the people need to awaken and realize that if they don't elect a "body of selfless servants" for the good of the people then there really isn't any reason to keep complaining about what they aren't willing to correct.

I have worked with thousands of people over the years. Hundreds upon hundreds of people have received the healing of their life. Each was able to come here and learn how to de-program their mind of the negative influences projected into their psychic space during their upbringing. It wasn't ever a question of could they, but would they? Where you stand with yourself, right now, depends upon you. Nobody, and I mean no one, knows or will come to know for certain - what you need to do - to better your life mor e so than you do. If you are walking around and inwardly knowing something isn't right with you, you better sit down and validate yourself that you have just had an intuitive insight. Quit looking for someone else to do it for you. Its not their job. Its your life, you do it. Your intelligence is letting you know it is time to get rid of the negative mental garbage that's in your way of having a happy, healthy, wealthy and whole life upon this earth plane.

If you have a need to know more about what I have shared, then come visit the healing clinic at the Spiritual Rights Foundation, Inc. on Monday evenings from 7:00Æ9:00 p.m. In case I don't see you, take a good look in the mirror and see for certain if you are being the best to you that you know how to be for a positive change in your life. If not, why not? After all, you were born to be pleased with you.
