The glib character who promised nearly everyone almost everything has been elected President of the United States. His name is William (Bill) Clinton. (By the way - he doesn't like to be called William. So, if you want to be in his good graces, call him Bill).
Clinton received 43% of the popular vote and nearly 400 electoral votes. The other 57% of the population is sitting back and waiting to see if his campaign promises will come to pass after his brief honeymoon. Meanwhile, at the White House, George Bush is packing and getting ready to retire like Ronald Reagan, Gerald Ford, Richard Nixon and Jimmy Carter.
America has changed Presidents but we'll have to wait and see if the President-elect will be able to change the government for the better. It will be a monumental task, especially when you realize 43% of the people voted for him but 57% refused to do so. Just as it was difficult for Bush to get congress to agree with his agenda, Clinton is likely to find similar opposition when trying to reform the power structure of Washington D.C.
Many of the staff members serving congress have been in the District of Columbia for a very long time. The congress may change members but members of congress rely heavily upon the permanent staff in Washington that seems to live on forever. It may be easier to answer the question of which came first the chicken or the egg than to try to figure out who is older - Adam and Eve or the congressional staff. In any event, the staff serving the congress is a powerful lobby of men and women who seemingly are indis pensible.
It is obvious the democratic side of congress intended to sabotage the efforts of George Bush, the day after the 1988 election, to lead this country in a direction distasteful to their pallet. The odds are that the power base in Washington will do the same with Clinton should they feel threatened.
It is difficult to believe Clinton will oust the "powers that be." He has made promises to them and to the American People. How he squares these two forces will be interesting to watch. Only time will tell if this Rhodes scholar is a man of his word. If he can please all parties concerned, he will undoubtedly be a miracle worker. If not, the American People were fooled once again. But, then again, what's new? Ninety-four percent of the old guard was re-elected. So much for the call for change.
The reformation of government requires the active participation of the American People. Leaving the politicians alone to do this great work is like asking the cat to watch the mouse. Politicians don't trust the people anymore than the people trust the politicians. The same is true when it comes to cops and robbers. Each is dependent upon the other. No crooks, no need for cops! If the cops did rid society of crooks, they'd be out of a job. Believe it or not, since human nature doesn't change, at least half t he cops would probably turn into crooks long before they jailed the last robber.
A government "out of control" isn't going to change voluntarily anymore than an alcoholic is going to seek help while he is still drunk. It is my feeling that Perot had a better chance of reforming the government than Bill Clinton. Perot was truly an independent. He was not only willing to put his money where his mouth was, for Christ sake, he was willing to put his life on the line.
Clinton may talk a good story but his glory is dependent upon the political action committee groups, business leaders and labor officials who lent their power base for his election. He must keep them happy if they are to employ the American People. Pleasing his backers and the American People will be difficult. All his rhetoric sounds good.
Clinton isn't the first American who intended to help the People. Every candidate seems to do the same thing. Politicians are famous for saying one thing and doing another. Deep within the psyche of the American People they know the politician isn't going to make good the campaign promises. They hope he will, but they doubt he will because they've seen so many of his kind renege after the election. Clinton may have good intentions. There isn't any reason to believe he is lying to the American People. He sim ply may be lying to himself and his backers will probably have to shock him into reality. As said, "the path to hell is paved with good intentions."
Reforming the government is going to require more than good intentions. It is going to take a revolution; and, hopefully, a peaceful and prosperous revolution. A violent and impoverished revolution is an activity only insane zealots would be inspired to manifest. What America doesn't need is "all hell breaking loose."
In the play, "Hamlet", Shakespeare wrote the immortal lines: "There are more forces in heaven and hell than meets the eye Horatio." Well, then, there are more forces in the United States and Washington, D.C. than meets the eyes of the American People. The "powers that be" elected Bill Clinton. They were represented by the electoral college. Whoever they are and wherever they may be, they are members of the power structure that lets the American People foolishly think they have a voice. These characters don' t care if Bill Clinton or George Bush is President of the United States. As far as they are concerned both are just figure heads.
Ross Perot had some good ideas. A government coming from the People is a far better government than one that comes at the People. His idea isn't a new thing. The founding fathers of America had the identical concept. They preferred a government for the People, by the People and unto the People. It was called, "We the People". With that in mind they formed the American Republic of the United States, a republican (power unto the People) form of government grounded upon the just democratic principles in alignm ent with the Will of the Almighty that every citizen would be treated as if they were a representative of Himself upon earth. Any sane individual can see that the government of 1776 and the government of 1992 are two different governments in opposition to each other. The government of 1776 was designed to come from the People while the government of 1992 comes at the People. One (1776) is called a republican form of government when America is considered a Republic; and, the other (1992) is called a democra tic form of government when America is considered a Democracy.
I've said it before and I'll say it again. A democratic type of government isn't necessarily a government favoring the will of the people. Other countries have democratic governments. England is a democratic government. France, Germany and other European countries profess democratic governments. It looks as though Russia and other countries that made up the former Soviet Union are turning into democratic governments. None of these governments are truly governments for the people, by the people and unto the people. Such a people led government must be based upon the view of the public that every individual is endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights of which are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Under such a government, the people who govern the country are charitable by ensuring that food, clothing, shelter and medical care is part of the national mandate. It would be unconstitutional, as well as unconscionable, for any citizen to be without these necessities.
It is the purpose of the U.S. Constitution to protect the personal constitution of every citizen regardless of race, color, creed, national origin or sexual gender. America is supposedly ONE NATION UNDER GOD. Under God does mean that every citizen is respected as the God of their heart would treat them to ensure that they remain happy, healthy, wealthy and whole in body, mind and soul. Such a government is the charitable government of a republic, republican in origin because the origin of the Republic is gr ounded upon the democratic principles of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
I am just as much against a democratic form of government as I am against a communistic and socialistic form of government. Such governments are inspired by self serving individuals who are secretly demagogues. I respect the republican roots of this country. A Republic of America is guaranteed for the People when the U.S. Constitution is upheld by the elected officials who give their life with the sole purpose of enlightening the People in regard to peace and prosperity.
The U.S. Constitution is the silent voice of the American People. I've consistently said that we need to get back to listening to the glory of the U.S. Constitution if the People are to enjoy fulfilling prosperity. For that to happen, it is abundantly clear that a revolution must take place. Should Bill Clinton be able to lead such a revolution the American People couldn't help but become restored to their rightful place as ONE NATION UNDER GOD. Those who employ themselves in such an undertaking can't help but be rewarded by satisfaction that they lived their life well by laying it down for the benefit and blessing of the upcoming generations born and yet unborn.
What's needed today is what was needed in 1776. A grass roots effort by American People rallying behind (electronic) town hall meetings. The American People must decide the direction of this country. Once they do, believe it or not, the royal presidency and imperial congress will follow suit and do as they wish. It is the only sure way that this country can come from the People. It is, We the People or - They the Powers that be. Fifty seven percent of the People may be ready to do so. We'll soon see. The Am erican People need protectors that will make sure that the elected leaders do lead as they were elected to lead. After all, "WHO WILL GUARD THE GUARDIANS?" Believe it or not, the God of America is the Sacred Spirit who has willed that the American People are to do His bidding of enlightening themselves upon peace and prosperity!
Let's pray that hope instead of fear begins to rule the heartland of America.
